Simple Pleasures
Resort Town History Book
Simple Pleasures
published
“Vacationers had first been attracted to the resort at Red Boiling Springs by the numerous mineral water springs in the area. Although drinking mineral waters was thought to cure diseases, Red Boiling Springs in its heyday never had the atmosphere of a sanitarium. Going to Red Boiling Springs to drink the waters provided an excuse for a lively vacation.” – Jeanette Keith, author of Simple Pleasures: A History of the Resort at Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee.
Vision 2020 Inc is happy to announce the release of Simple Pleasures available for the first time at the Red Boiling Springs Folk Medicine Festival May 11 and 12. Based on the thesis Jeanette researched and wrote in fulfillment of her Masters of Arts degree in History, the book retells the story of the roots of this once busy resort town, its successes and possible causes for its decline in popularity.
Jeanette Keith has been professor of history at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania since 1989. She completed the Masters of Arts from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee in 1982 and the Doctor of Philosophy from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee in 1990. Jeanette grew up in North Springs in Jackson County, Tennessee. She is the daughter of Robert and Melba Keith.
“The book is a pleasure to read,” according to editor and designer Karen Anita Davis, “enhanced by old photographs and post cards shared by several current citizens.”
The book will be available for sale in the RBS Heritage Museum (old bank building) during the revived Folk Medicine Festival. The sale of the book is a fund-raiser for the museum. Plans are to restore the bank building to as close as possible its look and feel during the hey-day of Red Boiling Springs; thus, creating a most appropriate home for local history memorabilia and artifacts.
In October 2009, a group of citizens gathered to discuss what could be done to increase the attractiveness of Red Boiling Springs to tourists. Believing the charm of the town and its history as a thriving resort warranted preservation, Vision 2020 Inc was chartered in June 2010. A 501(c) 3 non-profit, community support organization, Vision 2020 concentrates on enhancing the community through various projects. These community volunteers are committed to protecting the deep rooted history of the town, the stories of its citizens, preserve its historic structures, and enhance the overall quality of life.
